Who We Are
We are the Manawatū Multiple Sclerosis Society
We are a non-profit organisation, incorporated in 1969. We’re a community organisation employing a community advisor and office manager. They provide support, education and advocacy for people with MS, their families, and carers in our community.
We provide services across the Horowhenua, Manawatū, Rangitīkei and Tararua areas. Our office is based in Palmerston North.

As a Member of Parliament for Palmerston North, I’m proud to be the patron of the Manawatū Multiple Sclerosis Society. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated team supporting those living with multiple sclerosis locally, and their families. Thank you for the work you continue to do, providing outstanding service to our community.
Our Committee
Everyone who serves on the Manawatū Multiple Sclerosis Society Incorporated Committee, serves on a volunteer basis and because they want to make a difference in the lives of people with multiple sclerosis as well as their families.
President
Cheryl Burden
Cheryl understands firsthand the impact multiple sclerosis has on people and families affected by MS. She has developed a deep understanding of the physical and mental challenges people can face, as well as the complexities of accessing funding and support.
Cheryl has also been involved with Special Olympics New Zealand and is passionate about supporting others in the community.

Joe Fraser
Joe is connected to the MMSS community through his wife Mandy, who is affected by MS. He was asked to join the Committee and did so to support the MS community and enjoys helping wherever he can.
Joe is a father of six adult children and a proud koro to three moko. Outside of the Committee, he enjoys whakairo (carving), competing in triathlons and good coffee.
Treasurer
Shivani Batra
Shivani joined the Committee as Treasurer, bringing experience in accounting and financial administration.
As her children have become more independent, she wanted to use her skills to give back to the community.
Shivani is pleased to support MMSS and contribute to the important work the Society does.
Secretary
Sue Smorti
Sue joined the Committee after her niece in Australia was diagnosed with MS.
She has a background in early childhood education and many years’ experience working with community groups and people with disabilities.

Lance Broad
Lance joined the Committee after his wife was diagnosed with MS more than 30 years ago.
They became volunteers and members of MMSS and have greatly valued the support they have received.
Lance believes it is important to give back and enjoys contributing as a volunteer, member and Committee member.

Helen Sutherland
Helen has a passion for helping others and has a strong sense of wanting to serve people with disabilities.
Helen has been on and off the Committee over the past 10 years.
Helen brings a brilliant sense of humour to meetings.

Frances Smorti
Frances joined the Committee in 2025, wanting to contribute her skills in HR, governance and risk to a cause that matters deeply to her community.
She also has a cousin recently diagnosed with MS, which has strengthened her commitment to supporting people living with the condition.
Frances lives on a lifestyle block in Feilding with her husband Gareth.
Meet the team
Community Advisor
Our Community Advisor is the front-facing support for people living with multiple sclerosis and their whānau. She works directly with clients, offering guidance, linking them to health and community services, and ensuring they never feel isolated.
Her role is about building connections, strengthening wellbeing, and walking alongside people throughout their MS journey.
Office Manager
The Office Manager works behind the scenes to keep the Society running smoothly.
She manages administration and funding so that services are consistent and accessible.
By handling the background work, she enables the society to focus fully on supporting members and their families.
